The Christmas Column

Wednesday, 14th December - 31st December 2011

I had hoped to write a column for the Full Moon on the 10th (a lunar eclipse this time), but the cat was sick, something was eating the shopping bags in the boot of my car, and various other things distracted me from writing anything that day. I decided not to push against the mountain, to post-pone writing, thinking/hoping that most people would not have time to read it anyway in their pursuit of all things Christmassy.

However, there may come a time when you feel like a break and wonder what is going on in the celestial sky, so here is a guide to see you through most of the festive period.

Mercury, mischievous planet of communication, turns direct at 1.44 GMT on Wednesday 14th, so hopefully any inner circular dancing of thoughts in your own mind will slowly straighten out and form a more orderly line so they can be looked at one at a time, instead of all vying for attention.

This is a strange time of year when our bodies (in the northern hemisphere) long to slow down and tune in to the quiet and dormant season in nature, yet at the same time most of us feel obliged to pay dutiful visits, spend more money than we can afford, and generally undertake much more than usual. The festive spirit is lovely, and it is a Scrooge-like character who does not feel some sense of excitement and anticipation. Finding a balance seems to be the key to enjoying the whole experience, so try and schedule quiet, peaceful you times, along-side all the appointments for shopping, parties, etc. Go for a walk, have a massage, read a book. Escape for a bit.

On Sunday, 18th, Venus squares Saturn, symbolizing a time of re-assessment concerning values. There may be a slow dawning that what you thought was important is not, especially concerning relationships and money. On Monday 19th, the Sun makes a harmonious connection to Saturn, and on Tuesday, one to Neptune, making this a good time to sort out priorities and ideals. What is really important, how you can you spread more love and good cheer?

Venus, planet of love and finances, moves into Aquarius on Tuesday 20th (18.26 GMT). Venus is friendly and yet has the ability to be a bit emotionally detached, which could be a good thing. After the business-like move through Capricorn, where status and conservatism were the order of the day, Venus in Aquarius is unconventional, egalitarian and loves originality and creativity.

On Wednesday 21st, Venus squares Jupiter and sextiles Uranus, symbolizing a potentially sparkly day, good for socializing, although spending too much will be incredibly easy, as will over-indulging. Meetings with new contacts fare very well today, even though it may be a transitory experience. There could also be a light-bulb moment when an innovative way to increase earnings comes to your notice.

Although 21st December is usually known as the shortest day, the Winter Solstice, when the Sun moves into Capricorn, actually takes place on Thursday 22nd, at 5.30am, this year. It is a mystical time when there is the most darkness in the outer world. We counter-balance this by bringing more light into our homes, with candles, log fires, and warm colours, and joining together with others for comfort and company.

I love to go outside on this day, just for a few minutes, to listen to the Earth, and notice any thoughts and feelings that come. It is a good time to just stop, and be, even if it is only for a short while. I also like to give thanks for all that has happened in the year, and to begin to think about what I would like to happen in the next one.

The Sun trines Jupiter and Squares Uranus on Thursday 22nd, signifying an expansive, optimistic day, with maybe one or two unexpected surprises thrown in, just to keep you on your toes. It is not a day where you will want to tow the line.

The theme of planets trining Jupiter and squaring Uranus continues at the time of the New Moon in Capricorn, on Christmas Eve (18.06 GMT), coupled with a link to Pluto (the Sun conjuncts Pluto on 29th December).
There is an overall expansive feeling to the holiday period (and possibly to your waistline), coupled with a need to change. The more flexible and open you are, and honest about what needs to transform, the easier it will be to manifest the positive energy that this combination brings. It is a great time to take stock, and to be adventurous in deciding on new goals. It may not unfold in the way you expect, but, after a few glitches, it could be even better, if you can trust your intuition to guide you.

Jupiter, which has been retrograde (appearing to go backwards) since 30th August, turns direct on Christmas Day (22.08 GMT), making progress on spiritual, mental and physical matters easier. Where growth seems to have been delayed, or to have been held back, it can now begin to shoot upwards.

There is a lovely conjunction between the Moon and Venus in Aquarius on Tuesday 27th December (7.33 GMT), symbolizing love and friendship at its highest level. This is a lovely day to get together with loved ones and kindred spirits, to notice all the things that connect us rather than the things that divide.

Here is a quick look at the Moon signs for this time:

Tuesday,13th December: Moon enters Leo at 21.48. More sparkle, warmth and razzmatazz, this links harmoniously with Sagittarian Sun for a couple of days.

Friday, 16th December: Moon enters Virgo at 3.58. A good time to get organized (if you are not already), and look at the details. Do not get too bogged down with it though, just do as much as you enjoy.

Sunday, 18th December: Moon enters Libra: Good for one-to-ones, being sociable, letting go of judgements about others, and yourself.

Tuesday, 20th December: Moon enters Scorpio at 10.33. Possibly intense emotionally. Notice how you are feeling, and what these feelings are telling you. Honour and accept them. Look beneath the surface of things.

Thursday, 22nd December: Moon enters Sagittarius at 12.03. Combining with the Winter Solstice, a couple of days to be philosophical and quietly (or loudly) joyful.

Saturday, 24th December: Moon moves into Capricorn at 13.47. The New Moon is at 18.06. New beginnings on a practical, aspiring level. Make a wish. HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

Monday, 26th December: Moon moves into Aquarius at 17.14. A great day to make wonderful tasty combinations with all the leftovers (I love these). Find kindred spirits and get some fresh air.

Wednesday, 28th December: Moon moves into Pisces at 23.45 (nearly Thursday). Daydreaming, imagining, escaping, films, dancing, poetry, and mystery are all enjoyable. If you can, avoid the mundane.

Saturday, 31st December: Moon moves into Aries at 9.48. With a conjunction to Uranus at 11.28, expect the unexpected today. There could be last-minute invitations, or a desire to break free. The energy is fiery, lively and maybe a bit wild. Happy New Years Eve!

PS. I wrote this listening to Sound Medicine Man and Green Dream by Tim Wheater, wonderful music that inspires calm and contentment.
PPS. Apologies again for lack of apostrophes, which my computer will not accept when I am trying to load the column.

All times shown are for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
