From One Phase to Another
Column for Saturday 29th October - Friday, 4th November 2011

The new moon in Scorpio last week (26th October) signified a new cycle involving transformation; this week sees a continuation of that, the clocks reverting to Greenwich Mean Time over the weekend in the UK, suddenly plunging us into darkness an hour earlier. Scorpio is a sign that likes depth and intensity, so use this time to delve into subjects that enthrall you. Being one of the signs of the water element, it also is connected to feelings, so expect a more passionate vibe around generally.
This is an exciting time too, with Halloween, Guy Fawkes Night, and for me a significant birthday with an 0 on the end. The Celts celebrated one of the Fire Festivals, Samhain, from the end of October, for three days. For them, it was the beginning of their new year, symbolizing rebirth amid the darkness. It was a time when the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest, thus enabling people to commune more easily with ancestors, and other beings of spirit. So, all in all, it is a time to think of past loved ones, to cherish those still in our lives, and to tune in to the spiritual side of life, rather than the materialistic.
As the weekend of 29th/30th October begins, the Moon is in Sagittarius (entered on the 28th at 14.45 BST), and with the addition of a Sun/Jupiter opposition there is a definite feeling of optimism around. Expansiveness and breadth of outlook flourish, sometimes a bit too much so. Saturday will not be the easiest day to practice self-restraint, so maybe go with it and just enjoy.
When the Moon moves into Capricorn at 16.39 GMT on Sunday, a more practical, down-to-earth mood prevails. Expect the unexpected in the evening as Uranus stirs up the Moon.
Benign aspects to the Moon from Jupiter and the Sun indicate a positive start to the working week. Progress can be made in business and family matters, although there is the need to watch out for rose-coloured spectacle moments concerning finances and romantic matters. Some-one may be being economical with the truth, but matters should becoming clearer as the week goes on.
As far as Halloween goes, the costumes should be full of fantasy. It would be good to wear something a little different. The more ethereal the better.
The Moon moves into Aquarius at 22.08 GMT on Tuesday 1st November. This is not an easy sign to collaborate with the Sun in Scorpio, as Aquarius is happiest being detached emotionally, and Scorpio is full of passion. Scorps are very good at appearing calm on the surface, but there are probably all sorts of emotions being felt inside. However, both signs are loyal and want the best for humanity and when they meet half-way, good compromises can be made, and both can learn from the other.
Mercury, planet of communication, and Venus, planet of love and money, move into fiery Sagittarius on Wednesday 2nd. The Scorpio intensity is diffused by the change of sign; it is a good time to focus on the lighter, more humorous side of life. However dire circumstances seem to be, there is usually light at the end of the tunnel eventually, and the more willing we are to move towards it, rather than dwelling on the negative, the quicker it comes into view.
There is the opportunity to make really positive changes mentally and emotionally on the 3rd November, as Venus and Mercury trine Uranus. New ideas bubble up, and interesting contacts can be made. Think global rather than parochial. Consider learning something new, and generally venturing forth into new territory, physically, mentally and/or emotionally.
On Friday 4th the mood shifts again, as the Moon swims into watery Pisces. A conjunction from the Moon to Neptune just prior to this sets the scene for dreams to be more vivid than usual, whether these are daydreams or night dreams. Logic may take a back seat today, and it may be difficult to concentrate. The mind would like to wander, and it could be difficult to stay on track. If you are lucky enough to have free time, the cinema, theatre or similar will be wonderful places to escape to. It is a day when emotions take over from rational thought, and boundaries feel very fluid. If you can, detach and watch it all with interest, noticing signs that may usually elude you.
