Nuggets of Gold in the River of Life

The first week of January 2011 is a real mix of challenging moments and opportunities for positive change, a time of assessment and sifting out those parts of our lives which no longer have value. Imagine you are panning for gold, standing in a running river with waders up to your armpits. This week you may find an elusive nugget amongst the stones, which turns out to be the golden opportunity you have been looking for for some time. Or after a time, you may give up, and decide enough is enough; or you may decide to just enjoy the experience of feeling the water sweeping past you, and accept whatever circumstances emerge.
2011 dawns with a sparkling of celestial fairy dust, raining down from Venus, planet of love, Jupiter, planet of abundance, and Uranus, planet of surprise and change. Other factors may dim the light from day to day, and the end of the week sees reality predominating over dreams, but the overall tone is a positive one, especially if you are working on something that needs a fresh perspective.
When many are still making merry, the Moon moves into Sagittarius (1.21am GMT on 1st January), casting even more fun and games on to the proceedings. The weekend is quiet astrologically, with just a link between the Moon and Mercury (14.02) on Sunday, 2nd. This signifies a meeting of heart and mind, when you can articulate how you feel. By opening the heart, it's also possible to see more sides of an issue with greater clarity, so that progress can occur with any challenging matter.
On Monday 3rd, the Moon moves into Capricorn (7.39) setting the stage for the New Moon and Solar Eclipse on the 3rd (9.03am GMT). There are two main strands to the week. One is the aforementioned sparkly one when you may find some things are turning out far better than you'd expected, possibly connected to a sudden change of circumstance. Tuesday and Wednesday are the days to watch out for opportunities that make your heart sing, but a word of caution: check out anything, or anyone who seems just to be too good to be true, because they probably are.
The other strand, which takes me back to Monday 3rd, is connected to clearing out the past, pruning out things, people, habits, lifestyles, that no longer feel right.
Once a month the Moon conjuncts (is in the same degree and sign) Pluto, making it the time to clear out any baggage, particularly of the emotional kind. Sometimes this emerges as an passionate outburst, a need to express something that has been fermenting in the subconscious. Sometimes it's just something that 'clicks' into consciousness, an awareness to let go of something, followed by the decision to act on this. It is in Capricorn this month, a pragmatic sign connected to structure, boundaries and making a mark on the world.
The New Moon on Tuesday is linked to Saturn, and the next few days may see a gradual unfolding of things that need to change. A Sun square Saturn aspect on Friday, 7th January will highlight where limitations need to be faced, where there is opposition from others. It is a 'reality check' aspect, which has the potential for the growth of wisdom, because of a lesson learned in difficult circumstances. It may be that you give up on something that you have been persevering with for some time, and find that the resulting freedom leads you try something far more creative and more suited to your spirit.
Alongside these testing aspects there is the lighter side emanating from Venus, Jupiter and Uranus. It may be that life seems hard on one level, but on another it is light, creative and full of possibilities for growth. On Wednesday 4th, Jupiter conjuncts Uranus for the third time in less than a year (this happens around every 14 years). For those who like dates the last two were on the 8th June 2010 and 19th September 2010. It is a time of discovery, a time when there is a moment in time for new opportunities to take root. It is a good time to begin projects, but do take time to do proper groundwork, or it could all collapse like a pile of cards. There is a real mix today between feeling optimistic and pessimistic, and it will be interesting to note in what areas you're feeling these. It may provide clues as to which aspects of your life are ready for a new phase.
Thursday is extremely quiet on the celestial front; take a breather, get some fresh air and take time to mull over all that is happening. The Moon moved into Aquarius on Wednesday (16.08 GMT), helping you to look at life in a friendly, detached way, to see things from a rational rather than over-emotional point of view.
Venus finally leaves Scorpio, and skips into Sagittarius on Friday 7th (12.30 GMT). Emotions can be expressed in a lighter, more exuberant way now, so that even though there may be some difficult decisions to be made, the feeling is that everything is turning out the for the best.
Happy New Year to you all!
