Light and Dark

It's officially the end of summer time this weekend, and as the clocks go back (at 2.00 am British Summer Time, this becomes 1.00am Greenwich Mean Time), the growing darkness can cloak the mind with more inward-looking thoughts.

This suits the Sun's passage through Scorpio, a sign that likes nothing better than a good mystery to solve, tracking deeper and deeper to reach the answer, becoming totally absorbed in the matter at hand. Scorpio is passionate about people and causes it cares about, and and isn't afraid to come out from under its boulder to wave its banner.

However, this is also the time of candles, dancing firelight flames, warmth enjoyed inside and connecting with others.

In Celtic times, 31st October was celebrated as Samhain, a fire festival (5 days later and the fires are still burning for Guy Fawkes), where a community gathered to acknowledge the diminishing light of the sun in the sky, but the growing light of the sun within. Samhain was a festival of the dead, when the boundaries of the living world and the spirit world were unclear. It was a time to honour the dead, the past year, and also a time for rebirth, when people re-connected their spirits, uniting against the harsh reality of the impending winter.

The Moon enters Leo in the early hours of Saturday morning, adding colour and drama to the weekend, giving potential for extra panache when it comes to creating that Hallowe'en costume.

There is a feeling of otherworldliness at 21.01 on Sunday evening, as the Moon opposes nebulous Neptune. If you're not out trick or treating (or chaperoning your little ones), find something to do which feeds your imagination, or provides an escape from the fact that it's nearly Monday morning. Watch that movie, go for a walk under the stars, go to a wild party, or listen to your favourite music that feeds your soul. This is a moment to nurture your dreamy side; leave the practicalities until tomorrow.

If you've taken note of the above, you'll wake up on Monday in a better mood to return to the mundane. While you've been sleeping, the Moon has shimmied from Leo into the sign of dutiful Virgo. Virgo likes detail, being helpful and efficient, and to do the very best that they can. Worrying perfectionists, they are always striving to do better. It's a gentle sign, and blends well with the Scorpio Sun. Venus, planet of love and finances, also makes beneficial links with the Moon, and Pluto today. The Venus/Pluto link signifies new ways of making money, and/or deepening a relationship. It could be something or someone you've considered before, (maybe around the 12th September when this link last happened), and have been given a second chance to consider again. It's up to you whether you go ahead, but the signs are promising.

There is a meeting of mind and heart on Tuesday, 2nd November, so go with those intuitive hunches, as any decision made is likely to be sound. Big ideas are also in the air, but wait until Thursday 4th (if you can) to take them further.

A reasoning, cutting-edge feel permeates Wednesday and Thursday, as the Libran Moon makes its presence felt, casting a critical eye over issues on Wednesday morning, urging balance and fairness, demanding a clear-out of any unresolved issues, especially on the home front. This could range from stating clear boundaries as to what is acceptable and what isn't (with partners, children, parents, etc.) to deciding de-cluttering is necessary, and that this would indeed make the home a much more pleasant place to be in.

Thursday is the day for big ideas to be thoroughly considered. A harmonious link between Mercury and Jupiter emphasizes optimism and breadth of thinking. It's time to clarify goals, and work on a plan that could lead to a successful conclusion. Although it may take time to manifest, the first moves can be taken.

It's the prelude to the Scorpio New Moon on Friday 5th(New Moon is on the 6th – see next week's column), the Moon entering this sign at 6.16 GMT. Again (see Monday 1st) , harmonious links between the Moon, Venus and Pluto are evident, with a beautiful conjunction of the Moon and Venus at 8.24am (GMT). This is a love combination, and the link to Pluto symbolizes emotion with depth. If this is a relationship, it is unlikely to be superficial; it has the potential to be transformational, in a good way. Feelings you haven't consciously acknowledged before may now come to the surface.

On another level, (and it is Guy Fawkes' Night) this could be just a lovely day to be sociable, get together with friends, open your hearts, and say 'ooh'and 'ah' a lot as you watch those colourful, swirly, splashy and noisy stars of another kind, probably freezing to death in a cold field, and if you're lucky, eating baked buttery potatoes and clutching a paper cup of beer. Enjoy!
